 Purchased from the Indians in 1681, Old Tappan is a former farming town, covering approximately 3.23 square miles. Old Tappan offers a complete package: A variety of housing, several houses of worship and many recreational activities to enjoy. The borough hall, police and fire departments and the Bi-State Plaza Shopping Center are all conveniently located on Old Tappan Road, the town's main thoroughfare. Rockland Coaches provide daily bus service to Manhattan (travel time averaging to one hour).
Students attend the T. Baldwin Demarest School (primary) and the Charles DeWolf School (middle). High school students attend Northern Valley Regional High School either in Old Tappan or Demarest. Both Northern Valley Regional High Schools have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education with the Blue Ribbon award.
