:: Borough of Saddle River
Saddle River Title

Saddle River was originally the home of the Lenni Lenape Indians, who in 1702 deeded the land to Albert Zaborowsky, a Polish immigrant who first settled in Ho-Ho-Kus. By the late 1750's, the formidable power of the nearby Saddle River had turned the borough into an established commercial center where river water powered up to 13 cotton, grain, and corn mills. Others farmed the land, and Saddle River remained a quiet country community for many years. By the mid 1800's, families seeking refuge from city pressures had begun to develop the community by building spacious summer homes.

Gentle rolling terrain, numerous brooks and a lively trout stream, majestic homes and multi-million dollar estates, and an abundance of lush trees and vegetation all on 4.9 square miles set the scene for present-day Saddle River. The community is considered the most rural of all the boroughs primarily due to the minimum 2-acre zoning requirement. With many of the homes listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Saddle River still retains its small-town charm and tranquility. Its proximity to Manhattan and the prestige of living close to best-selling authors and celebrities have made Saddle River one of the most desirable neighborhoods in Bergen County.

A post office, small shopping center, speciality shops, two houses of worship, and a bank are all within the borough. Although Saddle River does not offer its own public library, the Upper Saddle River Public Library on Lake Street accommodates residents. Saddle River is also conveniently situated minutes from major shopping centers, bus and train transportation to New York City, the Garden State Parkway and the New York State Thruway. Saddle River is also a few minutes from the Valley Hospital in nearby Ridgewood.

Local social organizations include the Garden Club, Republican Club, Scouts, Home & School Association, Saddle River Valley Club, Recreation Association, Volunteer Fire Department, Little League Association, and Newcomers Club.

Rindlaub Park is one of Saddle River's recreational facilities, consisting of 23 acres which are located behind the Municipal Building, extend to the West Road, and are bisected by the Saddle River. The park's available facilities include three baseball diamonds, four tennis courts, a nature trail with an elevated wooden walkway, a playground (provided by the Recreation Association), and ample space for picnics and other outdoor activities. Another attractive park featuring a pond rests on approximately six acres of land on West Saddle River Road opposite "High Ridge."

Saddle River schools - Wandell Elementary School (public) and Saddle River Country Day School (private) - enjoy widespread support from residents. Because the district is small, it is difficult for anyone to slip through the cracks. Students begin their education at Wandell Elementary. The Eric S. Smith School in Ramsey serves as the middle school for Saddle River students. High School students attend Ramsey High School or Northern Highlands Regional High School in Allendale.
