As one of Bergen County's largest and finest townships
on 26 square miles of lush, rolling mountains and green
valleys, Mahwah is hailed by residents for its small-town
atmosphere. Although Mahwah's early development was agricultural
in nature, commercial enterprises flourished. It's location,
at the crossroads where the New York State Thruway, Route
17 and I-287 converge, is an excellent commercial location
where many large companies have chosen to make Mahwah
their home.
Mahwah has more open space than any other town in
Bergen County with almost 2,000 acres of state and
county parkland used for skiing, outdoor rafting, and
camping. Bordered by Franklin Lakes, Oakland, Ramsey,
Upper Saddle River, and Wyckoff as well as being neighbored
by Rockland County, New York, the township of Mahwah
comprises five sections: Cragmere Park (mostly residential),
West Mahwah (residential with some scattered business
and industry), the town center, and Masonicus & Fardale.
The diversity of its physical makeup is mirrored in
its wide range of housing. There are homes available
from the modest ranch to the million dollar mansion
to multi-million dollar estates. There are striking
contemporaries, stately historic homes, new colonials,
and charming Cape Cods to mention only a few possibilities
and all in a wide price range. Other popular housing
alternatives are numerous townhouse and condominium
communities that boast amenities such as swimming pools,
tennis courts, club houses, and nautilus rooms - all
are situated in lovely park-like settings. Mahwah also
offers a highly desirable adult community of condominiums.
As the fastest growing town in the area, Mahwah has
many recreational activities to offer its residents.
Campgaw Mountain Reservation, a 1,351 acre wooded county
park located on Campgaw Road, allows visitors to enjoy
hiking trails, camping, and nature workshops. Off Route
202 and Ramapo Valley Road is The Ramapo Valley Reservation
with a wooden hillside, a mountainside fishing pond
and waterfall, a scenic nature preserve, and outstanding
nature trails. Darlington County Park, off Darlington
Avenue, is comprised of three lakes (two for swimming
and one for fishing), tennis and handball courts, picnic
areas, snack bars and children's playgrounds. The Campgaw
Mountain Ski Center has a 1,650-foot slope with machine-made
snow, two automated lifts, and a 600-foot beginner
("bunny") hill. Mahwah also offers summer
recreation programs that include arts and crafts workshops,
outdoor activities, field trips, and nature hikes for
preschoolers and elementary school students. One of
the few year-round illuminated rinks for in-line skating
is located in the Mahwah swimming pool complex.
The Mahwah school system serves approximately 2,276
students, with four elementary schools, one middle
school, and Mahwah High School. Special-needs programs
are available in addition to a gifted-and-talented
program that begins at the elementary level. Mahwah
is also home to Ramapo College of New Jersey, a public
liberal arts college located on a 315-acre campus at
the foot of the Ramapo Mountains.
Mahwah's ideal placement along the northeast corridor,
its proximity to New York City, Westchester and all
of northern New Jersey, and easy accessibility to air
and rail transportation, all add up to one great location.
Short Line Bus Co. provides all-day service from Mahwah
to the Port Authority in Manhattan, approximately 60
minutes away. The line also runs to Atlantic City and
other points south. New Jersey Transit provides train
service from Mahwah to Hoboken via its Main Bergen
line, with PATH connections to Newark, Jersey City,
and New York.
