:: Upper Saddle River Today
|
|

Incorporated in 1894, Upper Saddle River was once a farming
community of
apple orchards, strawberry fields, and dairy farms. It
borders New York State and adjoins some of the county's
towns including Allendale, Saddle River, Montvale, and
Ramsey. The quiet, peaceful setting of this lovely community
on approximately five square miles is as much a treasure
to present-day residents as it was to generations that
preceded them.
A variety of housing consisting of ranch-style, two-story
and estate-styled
homes, line the streets in the borough. A one-acre
residential zoning
requirement helps to preserve the community's semi-rural
character and natural beauty.
Most homes in Upper Saddle River are serviced by private
wells and septic
systems. Gas and electric utility services are provided
by PSE&G and Rockland Electric of New Jersey.
The Recreation Commission promotes athletic and social
activities for the
borough's residents. Lyon's Park, a 12-acre picturesque
facility bordered by streams and woods, includes playing fields for soccer,
baseball and softball in addition to a state-of-the-art
children's playground. Covering seven acres are the
fields at Hess Court which are used primarily for baseball
and football but also have a children's playground.
Located on West Saddle River Road in front of the Reynolds/Bogert
school complex are five tennis courts which are available
for residents' enjoyment. Among the town's social organizations
are Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Lions Club, Scouts,
F.I.S.H., Saddle River Valley Music Association, and
the Community Arts Association.
The Saddle River Cultural Center is located in the
historic Saddle River
Methodist Church, providing adult and children's programs
that include art lessons and shows, concerts, dance
lessons, theater, presentations and meetings. The borough's
Historical Society spearheaded the restoration of the
Hopper-Goetschius house, the oldest remaining house
in Upper Saddle River. Tours of the house/museum and
special events, including craft boutiques, are also
held throughout the year.
The district school system is composed of 3 primary
schools: Reynolds School, Bogert School, and Cavallini
School. High school students attend Northern Highlands
Regional High School in Allendale.
Many residents commute to nearby cities for business
and pleasure. Public
transportation is available to New York City, 25 miles
away. Upper Saddle River
is a few miles from the Garden State Parkway and the
New York State Thruway.
